Character, said Schopenhauer, is destiny.

I remember reading that in my studio on Rue du Docteur Roux, a meandering back street in the 15th arrondisement of Paris, one block down from the Institute Pasteur where they would first discover the ticking HIV time bomb. I read a lot of things in that odd little room, a place I fondly referred to as the “beach motel” because it was part of a row of low-lying studio apartments that always reminded me of the squat, bunker-like concrete motels that run all along the California coast; rendezvous points for secret trysts, or way stations for the lost, the downbeat, the broken. In that cramped cubicle that another American ex-pat bequeathed to me when I first arrived in August of 1981, I had time for a lot of reading and musing. And as many a would-be writer had done before me during their Paris years, I also kept a running dialogue with myself by noting down whatever captured my interest. Not a diary as such, but I wrote letters, ostensibly to friends but really mostly to myself, which I would Xerox afterwards and then store away for some time in the future when I thought I might want to read it all. I guess that future is now. I went through some of those old papers and found this, dated December 22, 1982, 9:05 PM:

A few hours ago I finished reading an essay by Schopenhauer entitled “On the Suffering of the World”. A meal of fish and brown rice aided whatever musings over it I might muster. At any rate, I suppose it is important to note that this meal (including two cheeses, Fromage des Pyrenées and Bleu d’Auvergne) plus red wine, a Côtes du Rhône, labelled Landrillat) has come between my lecture and the reflections which I am about to set down. Important, that is, insofar as Mr. S talks a bit about man’s constant, unquenchable thirst for pleasure. Speaking of pleasure, he tells us that "…we shall find that, in order to increase his pleasures, man has intentionally added to the number and pressure of his needs, which in their original state were not much more difficult to satisfy than those of the brute. Hence luxury in all its forms; delicate food, the use of tobacco and opium, spirituous liquors, fine clothes and the thousand and one things that he considers necessary to his existence.”What I ate this evening might more justifiably be termed crude, though I do admit that, however indelicate, the meal did in fact carry pleasure with it. The pleasure was more in the action involved in putting the thing together. By occupying myself in such a way, that is, pulling out pots and pans, cleaning the fish, measuring the rice into a casserole, presiding over the hot plate, etc., I can momentarily lose myself. Without thinking about it, I click into automatic and my thoughts, however empty, trail on unattended. In this there is a kind of pleasure, a pleasure ignorant of itself. In fact, it is only now, upon reflection, that I can call my occupation with the meal a “pleasure”. Add this then, to the “number and pressure” of my needs.

I guess at the time I wrote this I had a rather romantic image of myself as somehow suffering, there in my lonely room, with a chill Paris winter nipping at my door. I must have been going through my Thomas de Quincy, “Confessions of an Opium Eater” stage, judging by the Romantic strains of the prose, with the “insofars” and “about to set downs”. I include this passage not for any intrinsic value it may have (the musings of a 26 year old hold a certain charm but do try one’s patience) but more to recall what was a time apart; Paris and indolence (for me anyway) and the wines and the blue cheeses that never again tasted the same as they did when I ate on a makeshift table next to my Olivetti typewriter. A time when I could spend hours in a cubicle lying on my bed, reading or seducing or planning this future I now inhabit .But as I read further along in my stunning exegesis of “On the Suffering of the World”, I found this:

…finally, in the last few pages of his essay, Mr.S comes to what has been on his mind, I’m sure, for the greater part of these pages.“If you want a sage compass to guide you through life, and to banish all doubt as to the right way of looking at it, you cannot do better than accustom yourself to regard this world as a penitentiary, a sort of penal colony, or ergosterion, as the earliest philosophers called it.” According to Schopenhauer, if we get used to the fact that life is a penal colony, all the misery that is concomitant will seem not at all unusual or irregular. In fact, we will find that “everything is as it should be, in a world where each of us pays the penalty of existence in his own peculiar way.”

He leads finally to the conclusion that we are all fellow sufferers, compagnons de misère, and for this reason, empathy (he says tolerance, patience, regard, and love of neighbour) should be our ruling star.

I was very impressed with myself for discovering this “ergosterion” thing. I went around for a good month after that talking to anyone who would listen to me about the “penitentiary”. In fact, I went to the American Library and hunted down a Greek dictionary to get a good translation. What I found was this: Ergosterion = Workshop of Pain. So there I was, in my little cubicle in the heart of Paris, the City of Light, eating mussels and drinking wine and thinking I was in a workshop of pain. Little did I suspect then that this bohemian life I was leading was a workshop of pure epicurean delight - the real “workshop of pain” was still some years off in the future, a future where the blue cheese would never again be quite as blue.

There is much flawed thought in a society where everyone is considered equal when in observation people are not always equal in every endeavor. If you are trying to make everyone equal in every regard then you will have no Lance Armstrong’s, no competition and humans will be bored and no longer wish to live, work or be productive. Think on the history of communism or the socialist countries, which fall far behind the innovation that a win/win Western Civilization has produced?

Some humans are better than others in some things and perhaps lack abilities in other things, that is a fact, we know this through simple observations don’t we? Obviously you are better than others in some things, if you are reading this article you are probably above normal intelligence; few people indulge in the thinking level that has brought on this topic. If we believe all people are equal then we will crush people like you. Is that okay with you? As we will all be equal right? Do you wish to be crushed? I have found individual humans to not be equal and if your utopia denies this observation, wouldn’t we all be living a lie in a perfect world? If one is living a lie, why live?

If we modify our current reality to take into consideration such a socialistic beehive scenario plan, which is intellectually reasonable as a possible solution to the lie we are currently living then, will we be trading one lie for another; a change of scenery? If so, we must understand that before we move on or we simply change everything, disrupt everything only for it all to repeat, and we know our human history has already done that. Think on this, too heavy for you; well think about something else, as you will then be thinking on equal footing with everyone else in the socialist brainwashed mass media mind of the beehive. Still think that is a worthy idea? Gotcha.

We have all heard the statements that; “There is no easy way” or “the best way is never the easy way.” Such comments such as "The easy way is never the best way" should be modified I think. "Never" is an absolute and while it makes for good vodka, it is too clear to be black or white. Now if you have a White Russian it is cloudy you see, which is more like life than the pure absolute you speak.

Sometimes something appears to be difficult and then once you master the art, technique or strategy it becomes quite easy, thus to you and from your perspective it is easy. And in practice, you make it look easy, because for you it is easy and thus you have proven the statements that there is no easy way; utterly and completely incorrect. You follow?

Nothing ‘Good’ in life is easy? Oh, really, well what about winning? Let’s say you are Lance Armstrong or Tiger Woods and to you it is easy to win. If this is true, would you believe for one second that to them losing was good and winning was bad? You see the problems with this logic. I submit to you, do not use the word; “Never” unless you use it with the words; Never will there be something in life that is completely absolute or Never give up. Think on this “never” thing next time you recite a trite statement.

Mankind is a funny animal, existing in chaos, yet seeking orderly-ness rather than embracing what is. It is the age-old argument of Good, evil, heaven and hell, interesting man made ideas; how about randomness vs. simplicity; randomness vs. orderly-ness; now then which would be best? Which could be considered evil and which one good? Can we exist with out both; probably not. We need both to move forward you see.

If everything is perfect there is nothing to do, you would get bored and sleep you life away like a happy fluffy house cat. When mankind has a problem, innately he is called to action to find a solution. Indeed any concept or idea is worthless without action. But the concepts are of value to those who dare to push the envelope, innovate and take risks. For those not willing and content, they most likely will not be the ones who invent. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention and indeed, Mother Nature’s harsh planet surface forces have caused us to create and modify our environment, grow our own food, build complex shelters and transportation. And yes weapons to protect what we have built from those who have reasoned it is easier to simply take than to create your own. You follow?

Speaking of which if their underlining reason for such call to action is greed. Then that blows out any comments about greed being negative? Because the greedy invent devices too, to better help them in their exploits, whether better machinery to make more money or better weapons to serve their political will or take from their fellow man, who is forced to reciprocate in building weapons of defense to protect what he has created you see?

Without building the weapons of war against our own species, which no one can deny is a very destructive endeavor, we could have never had all the great things and transfer technologies we do today, that in turn make our life so very easy. So in the end greed could be said to have been good, as it propels ideas to fruition and those ideas lead to additional ways of doing things and better more efficient solutions, thus further simplifying our life styles, but in the end remember that in fact greed of course being only one of many human motivators.

As we watch the North East Flood, we are reminded of El Nino in the Western United States, well that is to say after the Santa Ana Winds and Wildfires subside. Well we are done with El Nino and ready for La Nina for a few years right? Not so fast say meteorologists. But El Nino was not within the proper 9-year cycle right? Right but why; Solar Activity, Solar Flares, Ionosphere thinning, Global Warming? Hmmm?

Very interesting my friends; we know that certain things can occur in any system and that well; "events occur" that is to say situations or also called by non-scholarly gentlemen like me "Sh_T Happens" type events can be figured into a program, which takes into consideration multiple trends converging and gives each trend or event a value number or probability rating and thus many, many points of your data set can be figured to give you the answer you seek? Ah like Murphy’ism; complexity and chaos and all that? Yes, like that.

Well if so, is such a system valid, can it still predict weather? Yes, it can however the people who value such items are not always correct about weather and to be adequately calculated must take into considerations such things a micro events or trends which can change weather patterns so slightly that they can eventually change the whole to such a large degree that the big event predicted will not occur at all. This is true and though we have had weather people and TV Media blow out of proportion storms for the simple fact they wanted higher ratings, it is possible that the best possible super computer may render irrelevant data based on faulty assumptions on valuations of micro trends on the macro dominant trend. Luckily we are learning lots about weather and collecting so much data that the predictions are becoming better. But simple long term predictions of will there be another El Nino type year, where the Pacific ocean rises and heats up a few degrees above normal or will we see the trade winds and the Pineapple Express render itself back to the normality of what we have come to expect over years of farmer’s almanac studies and data collection? Here are some predictions on the question of El Nino - LA Nina cycle;

http://www.dynapred.com/_Predictions/El-Nino/el-nino.html .

The Internet as much as we love information contains a high degree of conjecture, opinion, junk science, un proven theories and garbage. If you study textbooks, it is the same, with little value of reality or any relevant perception of truth. Even books like "What your History Teacher Never told you" is half questionable. Oh the weather, will we ever get it right? Yes, some day soon all the hard being done by NASA will have it all figured out and well, Now you know. Think on it.

A small road can give us wisdom. These words may seem strange to many. But after reading this article many will change their views and agree with me. Every week I go to Rampur from Moradabad (both districts in Utter Pradesh, India) and come back. For the last two years I am repeating this to and fro journey. I have seen the all good and bad shapes of road. I have seen it in all seasons. I have enjoyed its grace and beauty. I have enjoyed its cuts and jumps too. This road is the Part of Delhi- Lucknow highway. It is 27 km in length. It takes nearly one hour to cross this busy road. Thousands of people travel every day on this road.

This road is very familiar to me; I know each uniqueness and weakness of this road. My people before me must have traveled on this road. Even there may be people who know it much better than me. They may be traveling everyday. There memories associated with road may be more than me. There are many people who have died on this road. For there family’s road may be associated with bad memories. Every body travels on this road a poor man to a VIP. This road has treated every body in same way.

For the last two years this road is sharing with me some wisdom, which I am going to share with you. The first this road tells us is never involve deeply with anybody. This road takes lots of people to their destinations. It travels with them up to their destination and leave them there alone for further travel. It doesn’t accompany them. But take some other for accompanying to its destination. We also have to accompany people up to their destinations and help them to reach there. Once they get it, our job ends. There should not be any expectation in our mind in return of helping the others. This is the real purpose of our life.

The second point is road remain same in all conditions and seasons. It never changes its direction. It may be in what ever shape, it always take us to our destination. Similarly like road, we should be ready for all difficulties and face them. We should never deviate from our chosen goals. But accomplish them under all circumstances. Many kind of situations may come, but we should be firm like road towards our destination. Our aim should be clear to reach our destination.

Third point is to be open to everybody. Road doesn’t distinguish between individuals. Every body is same for him. It never disallows the poor from traveling on it or favors the rich in traveling on it. It is open to a cycle in the same way as to a expensive car. We should also be open to everybody and not to restrict to some. If someone has the need, we should be ready to fulfill it without any prejudice towards any body in our mind.

Fourth point is satisfaction, road never riches any where or achieves any thing significant. Still road is satisfied. It never welcomes the person coming on it with frustration. It has nothing to achieve, but it is helpful in others fulfilling their dreams. We are in life become so obsessed with our goals, that their non achievement makes us dissatisfied. So we become a frustrated individual. Due to this frustration either our family members or the innocents suffer. We see only our goals and never care about the others. We require changing our outlook.

Road in his silence tells us many things. We require listening to it. For this we require a calmness of our mind. This is filled with worldly needs. We need to reprogram it and learn from the road.

One way species evolve is out of necessity and a genetic flaw, which turns out to be an advantage. We have all heard of frogs with extra legs, cats with extra paws and two-headed lizards. We have heard of people who are double jointed. Certainly there must have been double-jointed jawed alligators sometime in the evolutionary process of their 400 million years of progression.

Why didn’t the double-jointed alligator survive? It seems that it should of. We have all seen the brave or crazy people attempt catch alligators. Once the alligator bites down with all that force and power, it seems it is relatively easy to keep the jaw closed. With so little pressure needed to close the jaw it would seem this to be a terrific problem for the alligator, as even another alligator could hold it down in this way.

It would seem with such an incredible design that has allowed this pre-historic relic to stay at the top of the food chain to this present period would have encounter worse predator or threats than that Australian Outback “Don’t try this at home” media hyping, death wish seeking, adrenaline junkie?

Even if the alligator did not take advantage of such a genetic flaw along the way and turn this into an asset, one has to wonder why this design has not risen to the point of dominating the Planet. It is a better design for life on the surface of the Planet, yet it may be extinct. To see such a species so well adapted to go out of businesses seems incorrect as the laws of evolution and the concept of “Survival of the Fittest!”

One might ask what is the point in bringing this to the discussion. Well, here is my point; as mankind attempts to copy mother nature’s creatures to build artificially intelligent machines for various reasons, we should look at how our climate, terrain, global temperatures, eco-systems had evolved as well. In fact if we copy Mother Nature’s designs they may not be the best design for today or for the future. That would include humans too. What did you just say? I said the soft shell design of humans with the mega food intake needs may in fact not be such a hot design for the resultant of a climate change, global warming or the ice age which follows; do you follow? Would design changes be a worthy discussion now? It is probably too late for the alligator which we know to have existed in that form or a similar form for 400 million years. Is the alligators environment changing faster than the species?

Is our environment changing faster than evolution can keep up? Things such as the population increases, electronic tools, viruses we face? Maybe re-designing humans is not such a crazy idea after all; maybe we ought to at least know our options, in case we need to implement them in the next few hundred years. Is this too heavy a subject for you; conflicts with your religious belief system? Okay fine, then do not think about it, but do not prevent others from thinking there, we may need their research in the future. To save people like you and your offspring.

Our life is considered as a Modulating signal(base band) which doesn’t have any meaning if we dont lead the better way and reach our destination, and to achieve that and to reach the destination the strength in ourselves is not enough, so you need to a have a friend who acts as carrier to your life helping you to reach the destination safely, which would have been highly impossible without that to reach the destination.

At the same time the carrier(friend)should be in such a way that, they helps us to reach the destination in a proper direction and with good strength(INTERACTION),even if it over crosses or under crosses the boundaries of FCC(friendship) then ultimately results in INTERFERENCE(Misunderstanding).

The amplitude(level of understanding) should be high enough to ensure the proper transfer of signal.

The Noise (Misunderstanding) level should be as low as possible and see that the

Power level(Relationship) maintains at a optimum level.

Another important issue is that you should act like a DUPLEXER (flexibility and compatibility combined) so as to be ready to solve the problems no matter in which and whose way it comes.

Finally I (modulating) + U friends (carrier) = V(Modulated signal)

Let me give the final conclusion,

that you friends are my inspiration

This is my sole hearted declaration.

In The Language of Paradox, Cleanth Brooks takes on the language of poetry, stating that at its core poetry is the language of paradox. Brooks bases his position on the contradictions that are inherent in poetry and his feelings that if those contradictions didn’t exist then neither would some of the best poetry we have today.

Using works from Wordsworth to Shakespeare Brooks shows how the only way some ideas can be expressed is through paradox. His best example of this idea is from Coleridge’s description of imagination,

…reveals itself in the balance or reconcilement of opposite discordant qualities: of sameness, with difference; of the general, with the concrete; the idea with the image; the individual, with the representative; the sense of novelty and freshness, with old and familiar objects, a more than usual state of emotion, with more than usual order…(Brooks 40)

Brooks points out that while it is an eloquently worded statement it is also a series of paradoxes. He argues that since poetry spends its time trying to explains ideas and emotions as intangible as the idea of imagination it too has to use paradox to best convey those thoughts. Brooks bolsters his argument on the use of paradox in poetry through a close reading of John Donne’s “Canonization”. He says that if it were not for paradox Donne’s poem would either come across as not taking love seriously or not taking religion seriously.

Since the poem does neither, Brooks concludes that Donne is able to use the discordant image of two lovers giving up the physical world for their love and through their sacrifice achieving sainthood only because of the paradox that the imagery of their love and that of their religion generates.

I agree with Brooks to a point, poetry is filled with paradoxes as a way to convey emotions or sentiments that aren’t so easily expressed through a single train of thought but have to encompass many contradictory ideas to begin to describe that emotion or sentiment.

His example of Coleridge’s response to what imagination is, is an excellent example of his hypothesis. However, the Coleridge example also undermines his premise in that paradox is not just the language of poetry or literature but the language of life. In everyday life we find ourselves trying to explain something, an idea, event, an emotion that is not easily explained by simple, straight-forward terms but requires a series of contradictions or paradoxes, if you will, to properly convey their meaning.

There is no reason why poetry shouldn’t be any different and I think the radical tone of the chapter, this idea that he is creating a new and previously un-thought of way to look at poetry, is unfounded and hardly revolutionary.

Derrida’s Essay, "Sign and Play in the discourse of the ‘Human Sciences" is an introduction to the theory of Deconstruction, or a look at language and meaning as opposed to the object or thing language and meaning is used to describe. Deconstruction seems to center around the idea that language and meaning are often inadequate in trying to convey the message or idea a communicator is trying to express. Since the confusion stems from the language and not the object then one should break down or deconstruct the language to see if we can better understand where the confusion stems.

Derrida discusses his idea of "interpreting the interpretations," through the ideas of an event, the structure of that event and the play of the elements of that make up the structure. The basic idea of deconstruction works. To really understand a thing, in this case language, one would need to break down what language is, how it works, why we adhere to that structure as our means of communications etc. The problem is that we use language to analyze language and I don’t think you can do that.

To effectively use deconstruction theory and apply it to language or the human sciences, one would have to create a new language. Math has its own language, made of signs and symbols and numbers, deconstruction needs its own language. The obvious problem with that idea is that a deconstructionist would say, you would need to break down that language to see if it is communicating effectively. However, I see that as a good place to start.

Another problem is that much of Derrida’s essay seems to be circular or contradictory. The idea of the center being inside and outside of a structure is senseless to me. Derrida doesn’t full explain his idea that a structure has a center but the totality of that structure has its center elsewhere (278) It is circular logic that doesn’t hold up. Also, Derrida spends much of the essay speaking on Levi-Strauss and his theories only to spend the latter half of the essay discrediting or finding contradiction in much of what Levi-Strauss had to say. The idea of the bricoleur and the engineer as it applies to language and lit theory in particular work for me.

Yet, after Derrida spends a great deal of time explaining those ideas he spends a great deal of time explaining why it doesn’t work, and why Levi-Strauss was off the mark in relying on the idea of the bricoleur and engineer or empiricism if you will, as a means to dissect language and theory. The question then becomes, "What does Derrida believe," and leave not fully having the answer that to the question and also believing that Derrida is unsure of the answer to that question himself.
